High School Options
We offer a variety of learning options on the path toward Confirmation in Tenth Grade and further Jewish Education.
Your teen can choose to participate in one or more of the following activities: Your teen can choose to participate in one or more of the following USY teen activities:
- USY Youth Group– United Synagogue Youth is the 8-12 th grade teen organization representing Conservative Synagogues across the United States and Canada. USY is a wonderful way for Jewish teens to meet and socialize with other teenagers like them, both around Temple Sholom, as well as the surrounding Metropolitan areas. Active membership in USY includes the opportunity to go to amusement parks, local, regional, and international conventions and dances, as well as local events such as rock-climbing and bowling.
- USY Madrikhim – Temple Sholom’s Religious School Teaching Assistants’ program has become one of the most sought after positions for Temple Sholom’s teenagers. The Madrikhim program pairs a teenager with one of the teachers in the religious school in order to assist the younger students in their Jewish education. The Madrikhim program offers a $100 annual stipend per weekly session (ex. If you work Tuesday afternoons for the whole year, you’ll receive $100 at the end of the year. If you work Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons for the whole year, you’ll receive $200 at year’s end). Along with their classroom responsibilities, the Madrikhim are responsible for attending one leadership development session each month. Enrollment in this program is limited, however we will be happy to accommodate students who are free in seasonal increments.
- USY Kulanu – Kulanu is the Community Hebrew High School for Grades 8-12. Kulanu is expecting over 120 students for the upcoming school year. The school’s format consists of one core class designed for each grade level and one elective ranging from Comedy in Judaism to Jewish Dance. This is an incredibly exciting learning option for Temple Sholom’s 8-12 th graders. Temple Sholom’s clergy and professional staff are involved in the planning and teaching at Kulanu.
- USY Study Night – Held in the homes of students, these once a month discussions on topical issues will be led by Temple Sholom staff and will include dinner. Sessions will be offered each month alternating 8 th & 9 th grade sessions with sessions for 10 th-12 th graders.
- USY Independent Study – Students may also choose to attend alternative Hebrew High School programs in the area including Rye Community School or Prozdor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Manhattan. Independent Study can also be arranged through Rabbi Mitch or Ben Lewis at the Temple Sholom Religious School.
