Rabbi Mitchell M. Hurvitz

Born in Boston and raised in Palo Alto, California, Rabbi Hurvitz earned a BA in History in 1986, from UCLA where he was president of the Jewish Student Union and Assistant Director of Programming for Hillel. In 1991, he earned a Master of Hebrew Letters degree from the University of Judaism in Los Angeles. Rabbi Mitch moved to New York in 1992, where he began the final stage of his rabbinic training at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

He earned a second MA degree in Jewish Studies and rabbinic ordination with a concentration in Rabbinic Literature and Jewish Education from the Seminary in 1996. Rabbi Hurvitz began his tenure at Temple Sholom in June 1995, when he was named assistant rabbi, and in 1998, he assumed the responsibilities as the associate rabbi. In addition to his rabbinic duties at Temple Sholom, Rabbi Hurvitz serves as Rabbinic Consultant at the Stamford Jewish Community Center, and as a board member of UJA/Federation of Greenwich, Fellowship Clergy of Greenwich, Greenwich Chaplaincy Services, and Council of Churches and Synagogues. Presently, he serves as president of the Greenwich Fellowship of Clergy. He is a member of the New York and Greenwich/Stamford Board of Rabbis and the Rabbinical Assembly. Rabbi Hurvitz and his wife, Roseanne are the proud parents of Simon, Naomi, Ezra and Faith.

Rabbi Hillel E. Silverman, Rabbi Emeritus
 

Born in Hartford, CT., he is the son of the late Rabbi and Mrs. Morris Silverman.

Rabbi Silverman graduated from Yale University. In 1949, he was ordained a rabbi at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York; in 1952, he received a Doctorate in Bible Studies from the Seminary, and in 1974, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the University of Judaism. Rabbi Silverman served as senior Rabbi of Temple Sholom from 1981-2001, when he announced his retirement.

In addition to his pulpit duties, Rabbi Silverman is a recognized author and lecturer. During his tenure in Greenwich, he served on the Board of Directors of the Greenwich UJA/Federation, Jewish Family Service, Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, and other local civic agencies. He has also served as president of the Greenwich Fellowship of Clergy.

Asa Fradkin , Cantor

Cantor Asa Fradkin graduated from the H.L. Miller Cantorial  School of the Jewish Theological Seminary in May 2007, where he has been  Class President for the past year, and Founder and Chair of the School's Tzedakah Concert Committee.  He has an undergraduate degree in Vocal Studies from Indiana University's School of Music. 

 

While obtaining his degrees, the Cantor worked as a High Holiday Hazzan, part-time Hazzan, B’nai Mitzvah tutor, Choir director and song leader at several conservative synagogues and at Camp Ramah.  In addition, Cantor Fradkin has performed numerous times in Cantorial concerts at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera, and various Tri-state area synagogues. 

 

Cantor Fradkin and his wife Sarah have recently moved to Greenwich and look forward to joining our Jewish Community.

Steve Friedman , Chief Operating Officer

Steve joins Temple Sholom with 28 years of experience in the Jewish Community in Cleveland, Ohio. Steve was most recently the Chief Financial Officer of the Cleveland Jewish Community Center ("CJCC"), which has over 10,000 members. Prior to the CJCC Steve was the Executive Director at Park Synagogue in Cleveland, one of the largest Conservative congregations in North America, with over 1,800 members. Steve also has worked at the Bureau of Jewish Education and the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland. 

Steve has a wide variety of experience in financial management, congregant/membership services, facilities management, information technology, human resources, cemetery management, purchasing, budgeting and strategic planning. 

Steve has a Bachelors of Science Degree in Accounting from Myer's College in Cleveland. 

Steve is married and has three daughters. His wife Noreen is an Oncology Nurse Coordinator. His oldest daughter Naomi is the Program Director for the Hillel at Ohio State University. His middle daughter Susie is a recent graduate of Ohio State and will be entering Ohio State’s Medical School. His youngest daughter Sara will graduate high school this summer.

Ezra Konisberg, Ritual Director
Born in New York City and raised in Connecticut to a family of cantors, Ezra was educated at a Solomon Schechter Day School in Woodbridge. He earned his BA in English from Southern Connecticut University. 2001-2002 begins his fifth year at Temple Sholom where he serves as the primary Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor and youth leader. In addition to his duties in the Religious School, Ezra assists the clergy in conducting services from the bimah.
Phyllis Lyons, Selma Maisel Nursery School Director
Phyllis Lyons directs Temple Sholom's Selma Maisel Nursery School. Phyllis Lyons has lived in Stamford, CT for 28 years. Prior to Temple Sholom, she was the Education Manager at the Childcare Learning Centers in Stamford for 6 years. The program at CLC has 350 children and Phyllis was responsible for the curriculum for Infants, Toddlers and Preschool as well as training and managing a staff of 80 teachers. Since 1992, Phyllis has served on the board of HealthCare Connections.She was a member of the Stamford committee on Kindergarten Transition. As an educator, Phyllis believes it is the responsibility of the teacher to provide an environment where children feel safe, have a smile on their face, build self-confidence and develop a curiosity about things around them.
